Imagine Yourself Creative
Make Your Own House Sign – Workshop
A One Day Workshop for All Skill Levels
£155.00
Including All Materials
This workshop may well be unique. A fully guided and supported art/craft based workshop that has as its goal a finely hand crafted and hand painted house sign, though you can create a sign for anything that captures your imagination. Working from raw materials it’s an opportunity for you to create a unique and expressive emblem for your house, garden shed, greenhouse, craft room, or for that matter any exterior or interior space in your home.Inspired by your concept, you’ll be responsible for all the design choices and creativity; in fact everything apart from the cutting of the sign board, and cutting and assembly of the sign frame. You’ll be choosing your own colours for the frame, sign board, fonts & graphic ornaments or hand embellishing your sign with your own artwork. You can even try some new techniques if you’d like to swap your paintbrush for an airbrush. You’ll be using the same materials and many of the techniques I use in creating my own range of bespoke handmade and painted signs which you can view [here].I aim for simplicity in all my creative work, and that extends to my workshops. I deliberately keep numbers limited to 5 or 6 students to ensure that I can offer group, and detailed one to one instruction throughout the day. You’ll be supported every step of the way, and assisted if required, though I’ve structured the workshop to enable you to be the author and creator of your unique piece of house-art.
Included in the workshop is everything you’ll need to create your own hand made and painted house sign. Every step is supported throughout by my myself for design & paint, and David for any of the technical elements and the making of your sign boards & frames.
- Sign backing board, sign frame, access to all our fonts, graphics, ornaments and design tools.
- A selection of water based paint colours from our range of superior quality paints for exterior use.
- A selection of acrylic paints for hand embellishing your sign if required.
- All the brushes, rollers, tools and materials that you may need in the creation of your sign.
- Airbrushes and paints if you feel like swopping your brush for an airbrush for some parts.
- Sign fixings and a full size fixing/drilling template to make installing your sign very easy.
Please see the tab below What To Bring for more information.
Arrive at around 9.30 to get settled in, and after a quick run through of what the day has on offer, we’ll get straight into things at around 10.00.You’ll start with preparing your sign frame and board for painting, choosing colours, layouts, style, finishes etc. You’ll then get started on painting and making your sign which will take us – via a short break to lunchtime. In addition to lunch, the conversation usually works its way round to a relaxed chat about what’s been accomplished so far, and some thoughts about the work ahead. The first session in the afternoon is where the main elements of your sign are brought to a stage where they really start to come together, allowing enough time for any changes, or revisions in your thoughts about your design elements or finishes. After a short, and usually much needed break mid afternoon, a quick review will focus us on the next steps to finessing your work toward being “finished”.We’ll wrap up somewhere around 4.00 with a casual “debrief” and chat about the day and some thoughts on just how satisfying a simple creative project can be.
This workshop is for everyone. All my Imagine Yourself Creative workshops are structured to cater for a wide range of abilities, and reflect my teaching style – one small imaginative step at a time.My own artwork is a blend of process and practise founded on a few simple rules, one of which is to keep things as simple as possible.
When you have a beginners mindset, you’re not worried about looking smart. You’re more interested in exploration, discovery, asking questions, trying new things, and perhaps above all you see opportunities instead of obstacles in your learning experience.
How to Practice the Beginner’s MindsetAsk more questions. Especially basic fundamental questions.Be open to feedback. This should feel like a conversation between you and your creative project.Let go of being right. Focus on being open, learning not winning.Try something completely new. We are numbed by comfort, push yourself into a new space.Stay curious. Imagine how a child would respond to what you see and feel.
