High Resolution Scanning
Scanning is a key step in capturing an original digital from an artwork. Colour fidelity of a fine art reproduction requires a good scanner, colour calibrated software and a printer that knows how to make colour work, we have all three at JNA.
Print Presentation & Framing
Print presentation can be more demanding than the originals they stem from. Prints, to be presented at their best, require attention to detail throughout, from the digital file to mount or hand finished frame, care is needed at every step.

Frequently Asked Questions - Giclée Printing & Fine Art Reproduction
Both services provide exactly the same print options and archival print quality, the only difference is in how the digital master file for print is created. The giclée printing service is essentially only a print service, JNA receives a digital file and it’s printed to the print specifications as required. The Fine Art Reproduction service is specifically targeted at obtaining accurate colour fidelity between an original artwork and a print reproduction. To accomplish this JNA creates the digital master file for print by scanning or photography, once again the file is printed to the specifications required, and then compared to the original artwork to ensure colour accuracy.
There’s a detailed explanation of how to prepare digital photographic imagery in the product linked to above. However, it’s a very straightforward process of ensuring that your file meets some basic rules regarding colour. If your file is provided meeting the same rules we apply when printing, then your print will be as near as possible to your file. The choice of print media can also make a significant difference to the perception of the print, for example the same file printed on a smooth gloss or lustre surface will appear different to a matt textured surface.
This is for many artists, and particularly photographers a very important decision. For this reason we there are two products, Giclée Test Prints, and Giclée Sample Pack, that are particularly aimed at satisfying this question. You can buy a sample pack of all the standard giclée print media JNA offer, and/or you can have JNA print test strips of your file on your selection of papers prior to making the decision to print.
In addition if you’d like to speak to the JNA expert on paper selection, or for that matter printing, then just get in touch.
Unless your monitor is correctly colour calibrated your print is unlikely to look exactly as you see it on your monitor. Aside from the nature of monitors (they’re illuminated colours) the “colour rules” that your monitor will obey will not accurately represent even your own digital file.
Your print will be accurate to the digital file you provide, but your file is unlikely to be exact to your original. Printing, as we all know is a relatively easy task theses days; printing at high quality and with colour accuracy is, however, and entirely different undertaking. This requires a colour calibrated printing process, throughout the entire workflow. Scanner or camera, monitors, printers to digital files, printers to papers all have to be calibrated to a single standard to obtain an accurate reproduction of an original, and then the print compared to the original to ensure the process is “closed”.
There’s a detailed explanation of how to create and supply a digital file for print on the Giclée Printing product. There are a few simple rules to follow that allow you to standardise the “colour rules” in your file so that they can be interpreted and printed accurately to your print file.
Yes, we regularly print on canvas. The canvas print media we use is a premium Hahnemuhle material, heavyweight and flexible to ensure it can be fixed onto canvas stretchers without stressing the surface. Depending on the application, the canvas can be finished with a varnish to protect the surface mechanically and from UV degradation – varnish is essential if the framing scheme doesn’t include any glazing.
Yes. As standard JNA canvas prints are supplied fitted to top quality UK made canvas stretchers, though canvas prints can be supplied rolled if required. The “stretched” canvas is framed to suit your requirements, though typically canvas prints are framed in a “L” profile frame. You can see examples on the product page of canvas prints on stretchers and framed.
Yes, you can order a partial print proof as a test strip. You can find a product specially created for proofing test strips by clicking the link to Giclée Printing & Fine Art Reproduction products, just above. You can also order a sample pack of all the JNA standard print media.
If you’re intending to have JNA scan your artwork there’s a detailed explanation and specific FAQ’s on the product linked just above. In essence scanning is a very simple process on your side, and very precise on the other. You simply provide your artwork, determine the resolution of the scan you require, JNA standard scan is a high resolution of 600dpi, with super high resolution as an option if required. A resolution of 300dpi is perfect for prints at the same size or smaller than the original, JNA standard scans are at 600dpi to allow for any possible future requirements.
If you don’t require any printing the file is provided to you, please check the product for the specifics of your options. If you require printing, in addition to supplying you the master file and print, your master is kept in the JNA archive for possible future prints.
Print presentation and framing can add a great deal in terms of perceived value The purpose is to remind potential buyers that they’re still buying something of the original, an artwork created often with great skill and craft. For photographic work, prints have always been fundamental; so the aim is to amplify the power of the image by setting it appropriately in context. All of which can be achieved by sensitive presentation and framing schemes.
